Scottish Hockey – High performance review

The underlying ambition of this assignment was to assist Scottish hockey teams to win consistently at World level, regularly beat top-10 ranked teams, rise up European and Commonwealth Games rankings and produce more representative players at GB squad level. The review process involved evaluating and making recommendations to improve the high-performance culture and structure of the men’s and women’s game and related performance/talent pathways. Consultation was conducted with key staff at UK Sport, sportscotland the Scottish Institute for Sport, Scottish and GB Hockey CEOs, PDs/national coaches, SS/SM, physiotherapy, strength & conditioning and game analysis staff, junior national team coaches plus talent pathway and current/recent elite players. The primary focus was on:

  • The role function and effectiveness of the performance structure/staffing.
  • GB, Scotland national teams and underpinning talent pathways.
  • The contribution to talented player development being made by the domestic game.
  • The function/effectiveness of international age group squads in the talent pathway.
  • Coaching structures.
