KKP was commissioned to assess the demand, justification, appropriate scale and potential locations for a new outdoor sports facility complex for the University to replace its existing ‘the Farm’ site which is scheduled to accommodate other developments. The process also incorporated an evaluation of the impact on, and development of proposals for, the re-design of present outdoor sports accommodation at the University’s city centre Mardyke complex and the other venues it utilises in the City, including provision for cricket and tennis.
The nationally significant proposed development at Curraheen is scheduled to include the construction of a number of pitches (both natural turf and synthetic surfaces) for various sports (GAA, rugby, soccer, hockey, cricket, rounders), a pavilion to house changing rooms and meeting/dining areas and ancillary structures for equipment and maintenance storage.
In addition to conducting extensive consultation with University senior staff, major local stakeholders across a range of sports and the relevant NGBs, KKP also assessed existing and proposed funding models and the venue’s potential to attract regional and national training, matches events in specific sports.
